Drug uses

Yasmin is used as contraception to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin tablets are a combined oral contraceptive pill. Yasmin tablets contain two active ingredients (synthetic hormones), ethinylestradiol and drospirenone. These two hormones prevent ovulation. They also cause changes in your cervical and uterine lining. This change in the cervics and uterine lining makes it more difficult of the sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Yasmin is also used to treat moderate acne in women who have started their menstrual periods and are at least 14 years old. It does not protect against HIV infection (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted diseases.

How to use

Take Yasmin exactly as your doctor prescribes. Do not take in greater or lesser amounts or for longer than advised. Follow the directions on the packet.

Yasmin comes in a packet of 28 tablets. The first 21 tablets are the active pills; they contain the active ingredients (hormones) ethinyl estradiol and drospirenon. The last seven tablets are the reminder pills; they are inactive pills as they do not contain any hormone. They are a different color. The tablets come in a calendar pack marked with days of the week to help you remember to take a pill every day.

Start taking the first active pill of the pack during the first 24 hours of your period. If you choose to start the pills on a Sunday, take your first pill on the Sunday after your period starts (even if you are still bleeding). You will need to use a barrier contraception (Such as condoms or spermicide) when you first start taking this medication.

It is best to take your pill at the same time every day as this will help you remember to take it. Each tablet should be taken with water. They can be taken with or without food.

Use a back-up birth control if you are sick with severe vomiting or diarrhea.

You may have breakthrough bleeding, especially during the first 3 months. Tell your doctor if this bleeding continues or is very heavy.

Before using Yasmin

Tell your doctor if you have allergies to medicines. Tell your doctor if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, you may be taking. Some medicines may interact with Yasmin.

Do not take Yasmin without first talking to your doctor if you have

• had a stroke, heart attack, or blood clot;
• high blood pressure, angina, or heart disease;
• a bleeding or blood-clotting disorder;
• breast, uterine, or another hormone-related cancer;
• if you have a history of endometriosis, growths in the uterus, abnormal mammogram, irregular menstrual periods, abnormal vaginal bleeding, a lump in the breast, or fibrocystic breast disease, high cholesterol;
• gallbladder disease;
• migraines or other headaches;
• epilepsy;
• mental or mood problems (eg, depression);
• upus, high blood calcium or potassium levels, chorea (jerky, involuntary movements of the face, arms, or legs), varicose veins, yellowing of the eyes or skin, pancreas problems, or seizures;
• if you are very overweight, have not yet had your first menstrual period, or have fluid retention or swelling problems.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. Yasmin is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that it has been reported to cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Do not take drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol if you are, or think you may be, pregnant. Hormonal changes during pregnancy may have very serious bad effects on an unborn baby. Yasmin passes into breast milk and may cause a lessening of milk production. Do not take Yasmin without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Avoid smoking. Smoking greatly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot formation.

Possible Side Effects

Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following side effects.

Some common side effects include: headache, severe and throbbing, breast pain or tenderness, irregular menstrual periods, heavy non-menstrual vaginal bleeding, normal menstrual bleeding occurring earlier, possibly lasting longer than expected, nausea.

Some side effects that are less common are:

• irritability,
• decreased interest in sexual intercourse,
• crying, depression,
• rapidly changing moods,
• weight gain,
• quick to react or overreact emotionally,
• or delusions of persecution.

Other side effects include: unusual tiredness or weakness, longer or heavier menstrual periods, or vomiting, sudden loss of coordination, clay-colored stools, dark urine, headache, slurred speech, sudden, unexplained shortness of breath, abdominal or stomach pain, pain in the chest, groin, or legs, especially the calves, chills, vision changes, yellow eyes or skin, loss of appetite, difficulty with breathing, sudden, severe weakness or numbness in the arm or leg, unusual tiredness or weakness, dizziness, rash or itching, fever, unpleasant breath odor or vomiting of blood.

Missed Dose

It is important that you take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss pills at any time, the risk of becoming pregnant increases.

If you miss 1 active pill take it as soon as you remember. Then continue to take the next pill at your usual regular time.

This may mean that you take two pills in one day. You do not need to use additional contraception.

If you miss 2 active pills in a row in week 1 or week 2 of your pack take two pills on the day you remember and two pills the following day. Then continue to take your regular dose of one pill a day until you finish the pack. You must use an barrier contraception such as condoms or spermicides for 7 days as you may become pregnant after your missed pills.

If you miss 2 active pills in a row in week 3: If you are a day one stater throw out the rest of the packet and start a new packet on the same day. If you are a Sunday starter, keep taking one pill everyday until Sunday. On Sunday through out the remainder of the packet and begin a new packet on that same day. You may not have your period this month. If, however, you miss your period two months in a row you may be pregnant and you will need to call your doctor. You must use an barrier contraception such as condoms or spermicides for 7 days as you may become pregnant after your missed pills.

If you miss 3 or more active pills in a row (during the first 3 weeks): If you are a day one stater throw out the rest of the packet and start a new packet on the same day. If you are a Sunday starter, keep taking one pill everyday until Sunday. On Sunday through out the remainder of the packet and begin a new packet on that same day. You may not have your period this month. If, however, you miss your period two months in a row you may be pregnant and you will need to call your doctor. You must use an barrier contraception such as condoms or spermicides for 7 days as you may become pregnant after your missed pills.
